CELEBRATING 50 YEARS IN OUR SCHOOL BUILDING!

Melba Wilderman

 School Principal

Every school year is exciting! This school year will be particularly memorable as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Dedication of our “new” school building.  The old school, constructed in 1879 with only two classrooms, was renovated in 1944 to accommodate four classrooms.  During the 1950’s, the enrollment at St. Joe School peaked at 200+ students in grades 1st through 8th.  I would guess it to be pretty crowded in that old school with only 4 classrooms!  And with that, a Building Committee along with the Parish Council decided that a new school building was needed.   And as we know, change comes easier for some than others.  I cannot imagine the range of emotions, fears, apprehensions, oppositions, doubts, and pure grit that these committees had to deal with - within the parish and, most likely, within their own families.  I bet there are stories!  Now, 50 years later, we can truly say that all their hard work and determination was definitely worth it! Hundreds of students have obtained a solid foundation to lead successful and faith-filled lives thanks to the education they received at St. Joe School.
